Rangers manager search: Philippe Clement closer to appointment on four-year Ibrox contract

Rangers are “veering more towards” Philippe Clement over Kevin Muscat to become their next manager, according to journalist Peter Martin.

The Gers are said to have whittled their shortlist down to two names as the search for Michael Beale entered its 11th day on Thursday (12 October).

While Martin believes Clement is the frontrunner to succeed Beale, the respected reporter insists a late twist cannot be ruled out.

Speaking on PLZ Soccer‘s The Journos podcast on Thursday (12 October, 18m 58s), Martin said: “My sources tell me they’re veering more towards Clement with a four-year deal, but these things can switch at the last minute.”

Time’s ticking

It is fair to say Rangers are taking their time when it comes to finding the ideal man to replace Beale, who was sacked on October 1.

The two-week international break has provided a chance to review a long list of candidates and hold interviews, with the hope of an appointment being made in the coming days.

In terms of wider speculation, it certainly seems as though Clement is the Gers hierarchy’s preferred choice.

Rangers

With the Light Blues back in action on October 21 with a home league match against Hibernian, time is ticking down for an announcement to be made.

As for the late switch Martin mentions, the Gers are surely too far down the line at this point to change their mind on who comes in.

One thing for certain is that whether it is Clement or Muscat, they will receive the full backing of the Ibrox fanbase.

In other Rangers news, Alex McLeish has tipped whoever takes over at Ibrox to add an “unbelievable” option to their coaching staff.
