Ally McCoist drops verdict on new Rangers manager hunt as he shares ‘Big’ problem

Ally McCoist has shared what he believes to be the “big problem” for Rangers as they close in on appointing a new manager to replace Michael Beale.

The Gers sacked Beale on 1 October and are reportedly holding a board meeting on Wednesday to make a final decision on his replacement, with Philippe Clement and Kevin Muscat said to be the top two candidates for the role.

But McCoist, while speaking on talkSPORT’s breakfast show (11 October) admitted that the big problem remains recruitment at Ibrox and questioned how well the new boss can do with the same group of underperforming players until January at least.

“Do you know the problem, the big problem? No matter who comes in they are going to have to take over a squad where the recruitment, quite frankly, hasn’t been good enough,” he said.

“They are going to have the same players. I am not imagining they will be allowed to get anyone in until at least the window.

“It will depend on how much they are given because the previous manager was given a few quid to spend to go and get players.”

Big problem

As many fans have been saying over the course of this managerial appointment process, there is no stand out candidate and that makes it hard to have confidence that things can be turned around quickly.

The players don’t seem to have a clue what they’re doing on the pitch and most of them don’t seem to understand what it means to play for Rangers, or understand the expectations placed upon them by fans.

A new manager can come in and implement their style which should see some players perform better, but there’s no doubt there will be some players who simply don’t fit that style and will need to be shipped out as quickly as they were brought in.

But after Beale spent a huge amount in the summer there may be nothing left for the new man without first selling players, which could make it really difficult to see a big upturn in our fortunes this season.

Fans shouldn’t get too excited or too carried away by whoever comes in because there are much bigger issues at hand right now at the club than the person picking the team every week.
