Barry Ferguson refuses to rule out Derek McInnes as new Rangers manager
Barry Ferguson has refused to rule out the possibility of Derek McInnes taking over as Rangers manager, as the Light Blues need a strong character in charge.
The Ibrox club are searching for their second new manager in 10 months after they parted company with Michael Beale following a disappointing start to the season and are expected to conclude their search before the end of the week.
Kevin Muscat and Philippe Clement are the two reported front runners for the position [Scottish Daily Mail, 10 October] but Ferguson still believes that the Kilmarnock manager could represent the sort of strong personality required to take over the reins at Ibrox.

Speaking on the Go Radio Football Show (9 October) he said: “I think you need a real strong character, I think you need a bit of experience. The Rangers board need to go and get a really strong guy who can handle the expectations of being the Rangers manager.
“Don’t rule out Derek McInnes. I know I’ll get a few people having a pop at me but Derek McInnes knows the game inside out, he knows how to set a team up and I think over the piece during his managerial career, he’s had a decent career at it.
“But it will be interesting to see by the end of the week, which I firmly believe they will need to make a decision and bring him in, I would like to think the new manager has got a bit of time in the build-ups to the home game against Hibs.”
Decent career
Rangers fans haven’t been too keen on the idea of McInnes taking over the Light Blues with the general hope of the Gers’ fanbase that they will appoint a proven winner to ensure that they remain competitive with a chance of beating Celtic to the Scottish Premiership title.
McInnes hasn’t been a prolific winner throughout his career, by no means a shock given the clubs that he has managed, but as Ferguson mentioned he has a decent CV with plenty of knowledge of how to set up a side to be competitive in the Scottish Premiership.

But the Gers can’t take the safe option this time, having failed with their previous appointment they could do much worse than think outside of the box in hopes of striking gold and either Muscat or Clement represent more exciting options that will more than likely improve the mood of the fanbase.
The one thing that most Rangers fans will agree with Ferguson on however is that this appointment has to be completed quickly so whoever does take charge of the Gers has enough time to get them prepared for the clash against Hibernian, otherwise, the problems will only continue to mount.
In other Rangers news, Muscat and Clement have emerged as the two favourites for the manager’s role at Ibrox
