BBC Sport journalist moots ‘additional cause for concern’ for next Rangers manager after win v St Mirren

The next Rangers manager has “additional cause for concern” despite the Ibrox club defeating St Mirren 3-0, according to BBC Sport journalist Clive Lindsay.

James Tavernier netted a brace while Adballah Sima also scored in the away victory on Sunday (8 October), with the hosts having Ryan Strain sent off.

But Lindsay believes Gers interim boss Steven Davis and the next manager of the club should be worried at how St Miren were still very much in the game despite being a man down.

“Even with St Mirren down to 10 men, the hosts looked every bit as capable of scoring the next goal as Rangers until tiring late on,” Lindsay wrote for BBC Sport (8 October).

“That will give manager Stephen Robinson some consolation and his Rangers counterpart – and whoever is appointed as a permanent successor to Michael Beale – additional cause for concern in equal measure.”

Important victory

Rangers definitely should have taken more advantage of the fact that their opponents played with 10 men for over an hour.

Another worry for whoever comes into the dugout next will be that defender Tavernier was once again the player relied on for goals.

That was the case last season, with the new forwards undoubtedly set to be disappointed at being outscored by a right-back.

However, at the end of the day it was a huge three points for Davis and his players, who would not have wanted to head into the international break with another loss.

The interim boss had already lost to Aris Limassol 2-1 in their Europa League group stage clash on Thursday (5 October).

Now he can at least hold his head high after an impressive enough display against a team that are flying high in the Scottish Premiership, with three goals and a clean sheet not to be overlooked.

In other Rangers news, Gers fans can finally breathe a sigh of relief as an “unmatched” Brendan Rodgers statistic emerges.
