Sky Sports issue ‘several months’ manager update after Frank Lampard decision made at Rangers

Rangers are continuing to work through a managerial shortlist that has been in place for several months after Frank Lampard was ruled out of the running, according to Sky Sports.

The British broadcaster reported on Friday (6 October) that Lampard is no longer being considered as Michael Beale’s replacement at Ibrox.

Philippe Clement, Pascal Jansen and Kevin Muscat are also widely considered to be options for the Gers, who parted company with Beale last Sunday (1 October) after 10 months in charge.

In a further update on their website (6 October), Sky Sports reported: “Various other options are also being analysed by the Gers board who are working through an evolving shortlist that has been in place for several months as part of the club’s succession planning process.”

Appointment close

If the “several months” mentioned by Sky Sports is to be taken literally, that suggests the board were weighing up replacements around the start of the season.

That makes it all the more surprising that they kept faith with the Englishman heading into the last international break, as defeats to PSV and Celtic ensured the writing was on the wall for Beale.

Rangers

In fairness, Rangers did go on a winning run after returning to action, but it always felt like a case of papering over the cracks and so that has proved.

The shortlist may well be “evolving”, but it is surely now a case of choosing from one of those other aforementioned names.

It is expected that interviews will be held early next week, so fingers crossed there is a new man in charge at Ibrox come this time next week.

In other Rangers news, the Light Blues are reported to have already held talks with one candidate over Zoom.
