Rangers: Connor Goldson shares view on who is to blame for Michael Beale sack at Ibrox

Rangers defender Connor Goldson admits he and his team-mates are to blame for the club’s decision to sack Michael Beale last week.

The Gers parted company with Beale on Sunday (1 October) after 10 months at the helm, with Steven Davis in caretaker charge until a permanent successor is found.

Beale paid the price for a poor run of results, but Goldson – a regular under his fellow Englishman – accepts the decision was ultimately down to the performances of the players.

“It is one of those things. It is our fault. We are not performing on the football pitch,” he is quoted as saying by The Irish News, via PA (7 October).

“The manager has obviously taken the blame for that and lost his job.

“We as individuals, as a team, need to sit down and look at ourselves, first – are you doing everything you can to make this club better?

“You don’t pick up results at this football club; it is a tough place to play. If you do pick up results, then it is best place to play so we need to turn it around very quickly.

“We speak all the time. But there is enough speaking going on. We need to get on that pitch and start performing better as a team.”

Get next appointment right

Goldson’s comments could be seen as the defender being open and honest but, ultimately, what else is he meant to say?

While the performances of individuals were clearly not good enough, Beale was not exactly devoid of blame for his decision making.

The Gers’ poor form continued with their midweek Europa League loss to Aris Limassol, so clearly the temporary change of manager has not yielded an immediate improvement

The board have had a week to weigh up the options available to them, and let’s just hope that the new man in charge – whoever it may be – is able to get these players clicking again.

If not, due to the fact a whole squad of players under contract cannot be sacked, it will be the head coach who is made to fall on his sword once again.

In other Rangers news, the incoming manager has some hope for the future after news that emerged on Friday (6 October).
