Rangers advance Frank Lampard to ‘final round’ of manager hunt after ‘high powered’ talks in London this week

Frank Lampard has made it through to the “final round of interviews” for the Rangers job after talks with the club this week, according to Keith Jackson.

The Daily Record journalist reported via the paper’s website on Thursday night (5 October) that the former Chelsea star had been interviewed by the Light Blues in the past few days as the club “stepped up” the search for a successor to Michael Beale.

Lampard, 45, is reported to have met with a “high powered Ibrox delegation” in London on Wednesday evening before being advanced to the last stage.

The ex-England international has been out of work since ending last season as caretaker boss back at Stamford Bridge, having previously managed the club on a permanent basis, as well as Everton and Derby County.

On the brink

It appears that the process is moving along fairly swiftly and on the basis of the dismal 2-1 defeat to Aris Limassol on Thursday night it is going to need to before this season gets away from Rangers.

There was next to nothing in terms of a reaction from the players to Steven Davis’ first game in temporary charge, aside from a lively display from goalscorer Abdallah Sima.

So in the absence of a new manager bounce the Ibrox hierarchy need to get the next manager in to get to work on lifting this struggling side.

Lampard, for all he has a huge global profile thanks to his playing career and ongoing relationship with Chelsea, doesn’t have the managerial achievements to suggest he is set to emulate Steven Gerrard and take Rangers back to the top.

But ever since his name emerged as a possibility he has seemed to be surging towards a possible appointment so decision makers in Glasgow must be taken by something.

In other Rangers news, the board are unlikely to consider a new English option for the role despite him being “hopeful” of getting the job.
