Philippe Clement jets into Glasgow for talks with Rangers over vacant manager’s job

Philippe Clement flew into Glasgow this week to hold talks with Rangers about becoming their new manager, according to Voetbal Nieuws.

The club sacked Michael Beale on Sunday and are on the hunt for his replacement, with Clement named as one of the prime candidates for the role alongside some other big names.

And according to reports in Belgium (6 October) Clement flew in for face-to-face talks with the Rangers hierarchy to thrash out a deal but no agreement has been reached yet.

“HLN knows that Clement also traveled to Glasgow this week for a first meeting with the club,” they wrote.

“All parties put their vision and conditions on the table. An agreement has not yet been reached, but Clement is indeed a great candidate for the job.

“Frank Lampard and Pascal Jansen (AZ) will be his main competitors.”

Moving

It seems that a potential move for Clement to come through the doors at Ibrox could be moving if he is flying in for face-to-face talks rather than just having phone calls or Zoom interviews.

Clement is a free agent and would be able to speak to the club freely, and would be a cheap option to bring in as no compensation would be needed to appoint him.

But the fact there was no agreement found in those talks suggests it may not be as easy as it seems to bring him in, and interest from Saudi Arabia and Al-Shabab means there is competition for his signature.

He could be open to the best financial offer in which we simply wouldn’t be able to compete, but if he wants rich tradition and a chance to compete at the highest level then we could definitely tempt him.

It’s certainly one to watch going forward, especially with an appointment expected in the coming days so they have the international break to work with the players.
