Sam Lammers must be dragged off at half time after display in Rangers v Aris

Sam Lammers must be dragged off at half-time if Rangers want to turn their fortunes around against Aris in their Europa League clash after the attacker failed to influence the game whatsoever.

Steven Davis will have to make a big call on his first outing as Rangers interim manager after Michael Beale was sacked, but it is one he must make if he wants a positive result from his inaugural game despite heading into half-time 1-0 down.

The Gers fell a goal down early on in the game, and if they want to turn things around, Lammers cannot play any more of a part in this game. With Jose Cifuentes and Kemar Roofe on the bench, the changes are available, and the latter stands out as the man to bring on.

Deployed in the number ten role behind Cyriel Dessers, Lammers’ influence on the game was completely lacking. A passing accuracy of just 64% from 22 attempts showed his failure to link play and create chances for his fellow attackers.

On top of this, the summer signing lost possession seven times in the first 25 minutes, rising to 13 before halftime, with just two successful dribbles from five attempts, three ground duels won from seven, and not a single key pass despite his role to create for his teammates [Sofascore].

Rangers looked vulnerable on the counter-attack, with the pace of the Aris attack causing all sorts of issues for the defence in transition, and Lammers’ inability to keep possession led to more pressure than would otherwise be necessary.

Davis will have been demanding much more from his side to perform in his first outing as interim boss, and if he wants his Rangers players to show up, he needs to create more of a link between the midfield and attack. That first half proved Lammers is not the man to provide that.
