Fabrizio Romano drops fresh update on Rangers hunt to appoint new manager amid Frank Lampard speculation

Fabrizio Romano has shared the latest news on Rangers looking at Frank Lampard to become their new manager after they sacked Michael Beale.

Londoner Lampard has emerged as one of the favourites for the role, with interviews already being held by James Bisgrove as the club look to make a third appointment in two years.

But Romano, writing on his Substack Daily Briefing (5 October), has shared that according to his sources no decisions have been made yet and internal discussions are still ongoing.

“We all know Rangers are looking for a new manager and Frank Lampard’s name has come up,” he said.

“Still, I’ve checked on this and my understanding is that internal discussions are still ongoing, with no updates yet and no decision on Lampard or other candidates for the moment.”

Good news

There are no clear outstanding candidates for the job right now, and because of the success that Steven Gerrard had here some people are putting two and two together to get eight to justify Lampard.

The Chelsea legend is undoubtedly fantastic as a player, but as a manager he has been pretty poor everywhere he’s been and his most recent stint at Chelsea saw him come out with just a 9% winning rate.

His name should not be enough to see him enter the running for a job as big and prestigious as the Rangers manager’s job. So it’s good to see that the club aren’t rushing into this decision.

Kevin Muscat and Derek McInnes seem to be the other top candidates for the role so we should be speaking to them all and really deciding on their plan for the future, and then picking someone that best matches that rather than who has the biggest name or is the cheapest option.

The title looks far away but the squad is good enough to go on a crazy run if used correctly and that will put pressure on a Celtic team that have their own issues.
