Rangers Women ace Kirsty Howat named as SWPL September player of the month

Rangers Women striker Kirsty Howat has been named as the Scottish Women’s Premier League Player of the Month for September.

The 26-year-old registered an incredible 10 goal involvements as the Light Blues won all four of their games in the league, scoring seven goals, including an excellent hat trick in Jo Potter’s side’s 8-1 demolition of Dundee United.

Howat had never previously won the award, having joined Rangers in 2021 from Glasgow City but has been a crucial part in the Gers’ excellent start to the season which has seen them top the Scottish Premier League after the opening eight games of the season.

Speaking to Rangers’ website on Monday (2 October) she said: “I am obviously really happy to win the award. I think as a full team we have had a really positive September so to be able to get a little bit of recognition for that is really nice.

“I am really happy; is part of my game getting on the ball and trying to link with other players and then getting into the box and scoring goals as well. I am really happy with the goals and assists, also on the other side of that obviously my teammates have helped a lot in assisting me.

“It is my name on the award but overall we have had a really good month as a team. It has been a really positive month and it is definitely one we now need to kick on and go and do for the rest of the season.”

Positivity

It feels as though this Rangers team are starting to get to grips with what Potter expects from them and as a result they are not only flourishing as a collective, but individuals are beginning to maximise their ability and reach the top of their potential.

Howat is one example of a team of players who are currently flying in Glasgow at the moment and it is great to see her commend her teammates so publicly for their role in helping her win September’s Player of the Month award. Her excellent form saw her receive a maiden call-up to the Scottish international side which is yet another positive for the Gers.

However, this side are not looking to get too far ahead of themselves, after all, we’re in the incredibly early stages of the current campaign and absolutely nothing has been decided as of yet. Should Celtic win their game in hand, they will leapfrog the Light Blues and reclaim top spot in the Premier League.

With the first Old Firm clash of the season on the horizon later this month, Potter’s side have a chance to extend their lead at the top of the table and really show just how much of a threat they pose this season, but before that, they need to continue their good run in clashes with Hamilton and Hibernian.

In other Rangers news, the Gers may only need to pay two months worth of compensation to secure Kevin Muscat as their new manager
