Rangers must pay ‘sizeable compensation fee’ to appoint Birmingham City boss John Eustace as new manager

Rangers will have to pay a “sizeable compensation fee” if they want to appoint Birmingham City manager John Eustace as Michael Beale’s replacement, report Birmingham World.

Beale was sacked after a 3-1 defeat to Aberdeen which brought an end to his ten-month reign as manager at Ibrox, with Eustace one of the names linked to the vacancy in recent weeks.

But if Rangers want to appoint him they will have to pay a large compensation fee to Birmingham, after he penned a three-year deal at the club when he took over last year.

Rangers

“Birmingham-born Eustace is under contract until the summer of 2025, and any approach from Rangers would result in them having to pay a sizeable compensation fee,” they wrote (4 October).

Expected

It would be a bigger surprise if Rangers weren’t going to be forced to pay a compensation fee to whichever club their next manager from.

Bringing in a free agent shouldn’t be overlooked completely, especially considering the likes of Frank Lampard, Neil Warnock and Marcelo Gallardo have all been linked to the role and are out of a job.

But the names being linked most are Derek McInnes, Kevin Muscat and Eustace who are all in jobs. But the difference is how much they’ll be forced to pay for each.

Ultimately we’re not close to appointing anyone and it’s clear that the club are going to take their time to make the appointment, which means a lengthy process should be expected.

It’s one to keep an eye on, with Birmingham doing reasonably well in the Championship and him not ruling himself out of the job entirely. But a big fee being needed could well put a dent in any deal.
