Journalist offers update on Billy Davies to Rangers links as new Ibrox speculation emerges

Billy Davies has “no chance” of becoming the next manager of Rangers, according to journalist Derek Clark.

The 59-year-old has not held a managerial position in close to a decade since departing Nottingham Forest in March 2014.

A report by the Daily Record on Wednesday [4 October] suggested Davies was eager to get back into work by succeeding Michael Beale at Ibrox.

However, speaking on The Rangers Review podcast [4 October], Clark completely dismissed that rumour.

“There’s no chance Billy Davies will be anywhere near the Ibrox hotseat,” he said.

“I feel like we’ve travelled back in time somewhat if we’re discussing him coming in as Rangers manager.”

Not the right man

Plenty of names have been linked with the Gers job since Beale departed on Sunday [1 October], many of whom have divided opinion.

Take Frank Lampard, for example. Some believe he could do a great job at Ibrox; others feel he would be a massive failure.

The same is true of Pascal Jansen, Philippe Clement and Kevin Muscat – the three other supposed frontrunners for the job [The 4th Official].

But there are surely few – if any – Rangers fans who would consider Davies as being the right man to guide the Light Blues forward.

The former Derby County manager has strong Gers links, having started his playing career here, but that is pretty much where the positives start and end.

On the face of it, this looks like being a ploy by Davies’ camp to keep his name relevant when a less high-profile position becomes available elsewhere.

You would imagine by this point that the Rangers hierarchy have a good idea of who they would like to appoint, and it is unlikely this rumour will make them consider a major rethink.

In other Rangers news, a journalist has named who he considers to be an “outstanding” candidate for the Ibrox position.
