Billy Davies wants Rangers manager position despite no job in nine years

Billy Davies is eager to get back into management with Rangers and has strong support from influential figures close to the club, according to the Daily Record.

The Glasgow native has not managed any team since departing Nottingham Forest in March 2014, with that his second spell in charge of the club.

After nearly a decade out of the game, it is claimed that Davies – who started his playing career with the Light Blues – sees the Ibrox job as an ideal opportunity to return to the dugout.

Rangers

A report by Scott Burns for the Scottish publication on Wednesday [4 October] read: “Billy Davies wants the chance to reignite Rangers and get them back challenging for glory in Scotland and Europe.

“The former Nottingham Forest and Derby County boss is keen on the vacant Ibrox position.

“Davies is also set to boost his bid by putting together an experienced backroom staff with strong Rangers connections.

“The experienced manager also has strong support from influential figures associated with the club.”

Surely not

This fresh link with Davies comes on the back of a report by The Fourth Official on Tuesday [3 October] that Frank Lampard, Pascal Jansen, Philippe Clement and Kevin Muscat are the four frontrunners for the job, which has been vacant since Michael Beale was sacked on Sunday [1 October].

You can only assume this rumour has been put out by Davies’ camp to get his name out there when other positions come up, particularly elsewhere in the Scottish Premiership.

Davies has had moderate success in England with Preston North End, Derby County and Forest, while also previously managing in the Scottish Premiership with Motherwell between 1998 and 2001.

Rangers

That shows just how far back the former Gers midfielder’s coaching career goes, but he is surely not what the board are after in terms of what he can offer taking the club forward.

The 59-year-old may have links to Ibrox, and it may well be that some prominent figures would like him in charge, but this is an appointment that would make very little sense.

In other Rangers news, the Gers have been urged to bring Graeme Souness on board at Ibrox.
