Journalist shares what assurance Frank Lampard is seeking at Rangers over replacing Michael Beale

Frank Lampard “would need to be sure of the situation at Rangers” before formally putting his name forward to succeed Michael Beale, according to The Telegraph.

The former Derby County, Everton and Chelsea manager is reportedly one of four names in the frame to replace Beale, along with Pascal Jansen, Philippe Clement and Kevin Muscat [The 4th Official].

Lampard has previously talked up Rangers and sat among their supporters during their 2008 UEFA Cup final defeat to Zenit St Petersburg, but he supposedly still needs assurances if he is to take charge at Ibrox.

In an update on the managerial situation on Tuesday [3 October], The Telegraph reported: “Despite that affinity, however, Lampard would need to be sure of the situation at Rangers and the club’s plans for the future, having already experienced highly difficult situations at Everton and Chelsea, particularly during his interim period.”

No surprise

Lampard may be a ‘name’, and Steven Gerrard’s title success at Ibrox bodes well for the Englishman in that regard, but the other candidates mentioned just seem like more exciting choices on the face of it.

Clement and Muscat have won multiple league titles, for example, while Jansen has been praised for his work at AZ.

The fact Lampard is supposedly seeking assurances should not work against him in this instance. Indeed, it would be surprising if the other three – assuming they are interested – are not doing the same.

Beale is reported to have spent £15million on new recruits in the summer, which was considered a large sum of money.

Lampard would have been more accustomed to spending three or four times that amount south of the border on a single squad player.

Ultimately, it is down to the board to decide whether the Englishman has the pedigree to advance through to the next stage of the process, with that decision likely to be made in the coming days.

In other Rangers news, the Gers have been urged to consider appointing Graeme Souness to oversee their search for a new manager.
