Kenny Miller reacts to Steven Davis appointment at Rangers as ‘huge gamble’ claim made

It is a “huge gamble” from Rangers to appoint Steven Davis as interim manager, according to pundit Kenny Miller.

The appointment was made by the club on Sunday (1 October) after Michael Beale was sacked, as per the official Rangers website.

The midfielder will temporarily lead the Scottish outfit alongside Alex Rae, Steven Smith, Brian Gilmour and Colin Stewart.

“It’s a huge gamble [appointing Steven Davis] but when clubs get thrown into these situations they have to have someone in charge,” said Miller, as quoted by Sky Sports.

“Steven’s a really good guy to have, he’s calm and knows everything about the club, he’s been in as a player for a long, long time and been part of some really successful teams.

“He’ll be able to front it in the short term, but this next appointment is really important for this board that they get the right guy.”

The decision to part ways with Beale comes as no surprise, with the Gers suffering a hugely disappointing 3-1 defeat to Aberdeen shortly before the decision was made.

Such results are unacceptable, particularly given how it was at Ibrox and how the Dons are struggling this season.

The pressure had been building on Beale for quite some time, and perhaps the board had decided even before the Aberdeen loss that a change would soon be needed.

They may even have a suitable replacement lined up, but for now it is veteran midfielder Davis who takes over. The Northern Ireland international boasts plenty of experience, and importantly knows the Gers inside out thanks to his time at the club.

It is the 38-year-old’s second spell at Ibrox, having initially joined on loan from Southampton in 2019 before signing a permanent deal.

That was exactly like his first spell at the club, with Davis arriving on loan from Fulham in 2008 before agreeing a permanent transfer.
