Frank Lampard would like to replace Michael Beale after Rangers sound out ‘outstanding candidate’ Graham Potter – Luke Edwards

Rangers will have already “sounded out” Graham Potter as the “outstanding candidate” and would be “sure” to have buy-in from Frank Lampard, according to Luke Edwards.

The Telegraph journalist said on BBC podcast Transfer Gossip Daily on 2 October that the younger of the two former Chelsea bosses has a “very good agent” and “would like” the Ibrox job after Michael Beale was sacked.

Potter is already said to have ruled himself out of the running [Daily Record, 2 October] but the man who succeeded him at Stamford Bridge last season could be an option.

Edwards said: “Rangers have that similar pulling power. I know they’re not as successful as Celtic at the moment but they have similar pulling power. Obviously Steven Gerrard went up there.

“I’m sure Frank Lampard would like it. Frank Lampard, who has a very good agent and is continually linked with jobs despite not exactly excelling at any of them.

“The outstanding candidate is Graham Potter… he will haunt all the managers who are under pressure. I think Rangers will have certainly sounded him out. I think that would have been their first port of call.”

Alarm bells

Potter would have made a lot of sense if he was willing, even allowing for his miserable Chelsea experience last season, but Lampard sounds like asking for trouble.

Granted, Rangers found their way back to the top in Scotland under the guidance of the ex-England midfielder’s long-time rival Premier League rival and international teammate.

But since moderate success in his first season at Chelsea there has been nothing to suggest he has the credentials to turn the ship around at Ibrox.

Rangers

He may be a big name based on his playing career, but despite three separate Premier League jobs the jury is very much still out as a manager, at best.

Runner-up in the FA Cup final and Champions League qualification in 2020 was relatively impressive while bringing through academy products, but since then his has been sacked by Chelsea and Everton after apparently having fallen out with players, and his return to Stamford Bridge in caretaker charge last term was miserable.

He may turn out to be a decent coach but he is not the answer for Rangers at a crucial point right now.

In other Rangers news, pundits have shared reasons from their visit to the boardroom why the club are so far behind Celtic after Beale’s sacking.
