Four Lads shares Cyriel Dessers verdict after what fans did in 3-1 defeat to Aberdeen, he may ‘never recover’

Official Rangers partner Four Lads Had a Dream believes Cyriel Dessers may “never recover” after he was booed off in the 3-1 loss to Aberdeen on Saturday (30 September).

Steven Clifford, speaking on Rangers Review (3 October, 8m:54sec) shared that the way that crowd are with the summer signing, new interim manager Steven Davis should not play him in the next two fixtures at least and it would take a “helluva turnaround” should Dessers recover from such a treatment.

The Nigerian striker has drawn frank criticism from fans and pundits for his performances since his move from Italian outfit Cremonese and has been used as a poster boy for the Light Blues’ terrible summer transfer window, which ultimately cost Michael Beale his job on Sunday (1 October).

And Clifford, speaking on Rangers Review said: “I don’t think you can play Cyriel Dessers at the moment in time.

“The way that the crowd are with him which I don’t particularly agree with. I don’t mind fans having a say when it comes to players at the end and booing as a collective but individually to single out guys and boo them when they’re coming off, I don’t agree with, I think that becomes really difficult.

“I mean players never ever really recover and I don’t think Dessers will ever recover at Rangers, it will take a helluva turnaround, it can happen very quickly but with that in mind, I won’t be playing him in these games coming up.

“I just don’t think it works for anybody. If Kemar Roofe is fit, I would play him and then I would look elsewhere also.”

Unfortunate start

It’s certainly never nice when fans single out a player individually and ridicule him with boos and unwanted and unnecessary criticism and that’s the unfortunate treatment Dessers is receiving right now which isn’t right.

It seems as if the Rangers faithful were never convinced about his signing in the first place and their concerns will have been justified given his worrying goalscoring record at previous clubs when the club desperately needed a ruthless finisher over the summer.

Rangers

That problem has reared its ugly head again this season and Dessers has become an unfortunate and unlucky scapegoat for the club’s current failure and malaise with Beale now out of a job.

The pressure to be a Rangers success story is absolutely immense and difficult and Dessers may not have been prepared for that challenge.

After what happened after he came off against Aberdeen, it remains to be seen whether he can pick himself up, dust himself off and go again.

That’s why Rangers have to get their next managerial appointment spot on. It’s got to be a candidate who can not only make an immediate impact on the pitch but completely galvanise a squad with its confidence on the floor right now.

Dessers isn’t the only but his start at Ibrox has made him an unnecessary target which really isn’t fair. Clifford is right, Davis may have to make the decision to remove him from the firing line over these next two fixtures.

In other Rangers news, an issue has already emerged in the search for a new manager.
