Barry Ferguson calls for Rangers to end ‘chaotic’ spell with new manager

Barry Ferguson has called for Rangers to appoint a manager who can lead the Ibrox club for “four or five years” following a chaotic spell for the Gers.

Beale was sacked following the Light Blues 3-1 defeat to Aberdeen on Saturday (30 September) after starting the season poorly and it has left Rangers looking for a second new manager in only ten months in what has been a huge break from tradition.

The Gers had a fairly unique record of previously standing by managers for long periods of time and his brought them success in the past and former captain Ferguson has called for a return to that stability in whoever Rangers decide to appoint next.

Writing for the Daily Record (3 October) he said: “What’s happened over these last few years is exactly the opposite. It all looks a bit chaotic – like a club struggling to find a sense of direction on the pitch.

“And that’s why chairman John Bennett has to get this next decision spot on. What Rangers need right now is a manager who can be trusted to lead them forward over the course of the next three, four or five years.

“Get the right man in and give him time to restore some calmness by giving the fans what they want most of all – trophies. And plenty of them.

“I’m sorry that Beale wasn’t that man. Like every other Rangers supporter, I desperately wanted to see him succeed. Same with Giovanni van Bronckhorst before him. But that’s two managers gone in the space of ten months and Rangers can’t go on like this any longer.”

Of course

Every football club want a manager to come in and steer the ship for a number of seasons winning trophies consistently along the way and, naturally, Ferguson is hoping the Gers can find similar, but sadly it is not that simple.

Managers in modern-day football don’t tend to stay at clubs for four or five years, it is becoming less and less common as coaches jump from job to job and clubs cut ties at the first sign of trouble. While Rangers would love a long-term project, it just might not be possible.

When they appointed Beale and van Bronckhorst, that would have been the view to have them in charge for years to come with a steady flow of trophies, but planning that sort of future is much easier than creating it in practice.

The only man to lift the Scottish Premiership recently, Steven Gerrard didn’t afford the Gers the same patience that Ferguson wants the club to give to a new manager.

What is crucial, is that the Gers get this appointment right. To start with they need somebody to come in and sort out the short-term future of the club in an attempt to salvage this season and then they can begin to think about the years to come.
