Todd Cantwell breaks silence with emotional message to Michael Beale following Rangers sacking

Todd Cantwell has broken his silence with an emotional message to Michael Beale following Rangers’ decision to sack the former QPR boss.

Beale, who had been in charge at Ibrox for the last 10 months was relieved of his duties on Sunday (1 October) evening, following the Light Blues’ difficult start to the season, with the final straw being a 3-1 home defeat to Aberdeen on Saturday (30 September).

The manager, who had formally been Steven Gerrard’s assistant in Glasgow, was the man to bring former Norwich star Cantwell to Ibrox in January and the 25-year-old midfielder was quick to send a message of support to his outgoing boss.

In a post shared to Instagram (1 October), Cantwell wrote: “I want to thank you and your staff for bringing me to this brilliant football club. You allowed me to build my connection with the club and I will always be thankful for that.

“I have nothing but respect and appreciation towards you and the person you are. I wish you well.”

Praise

Cantwell may have been quick to react to the news and send a message of support to his former manager, but it is quite clear from the message that his main positivity comes from Beale’s decision to sign him, rather than any particular praise for his actual coaching.

The 25-year-old has been one of the few bright sparks in the otherwise dreary tenure of Beale in Glagsow and alongside Jack Butland and Nicolas Raskin he is part of a trio of signings that have really strengthened the Ibrox club during his tenure.

Unfortunately for Beale, Butland was only one of nine signings this summer and barring a few moments from the likes of Abdallah Sima and Danilo, there has been little to suggest that any of them will have the same impact as Cantwell in Scotland.

The former Rangers manager can get some praise for bringing Cantwell to Ibrox and he was well-liked by the midfielder, but you could argue that another manager would have got more out of the 25-year-old and that could yet be proven depending on who takes over at Ibrox.

But first Cantwell needs to get himself fit and available as the Gers look much better when he’s in the squad. He hasn’t featured since the Old Firm defeat to Celtic and with another international break looming, the midfielder needs to be back in the next couple of weeks.
