Simon Jordan tips Neil Warnock to become new Rangers manager

Simon Jordan has tipped Neil Warnock to take over the vacant manager position at Rangers, as he believes the 72-year-old could do the job “in his sleep.”

Rangers are once again looking for a new manager having parted ways with Michael Beale on Sunday (1 October) following the Light Blues disappointing start to the season, with the final straw being a defeat at the hands of Aberdeen.

While the early names linked with the post have been Kevin Muscat and AZ Alkmaar boss Pascal Jansen [talkSport, 2 October], former Crystal Palace chairman Jordan has suggested Warnock would be an excellent choice for the Ibrox club.

Speaking on talkSport’s White & Jordan on Monday (2 October, 10:38) he said: “I would advocate for Neil, even at the stage he’s at of his career. He’s 72 years young, he’s not 72 years old. Knowing Neil as I know him, I know he would kick backside and take numbers up there.

“I know he would concentrate minds, I know that he would get the fans on side. I know that Warnock could go and do that job in his sleep. I know that he could lift them, whether he could overtake Celtic would be a different matter, but he could get them closer.

“This guy could go and straighten Rangers out. They don’t need stability, they need outcomes. Neil can get them into a better place and build them into a better place.”

Interesting

Realistically, most Rangers fans will be pining for a name that will restore their status at the biggest and best club in Scotland by returning them to the position of Scottish Premiership champions and it is unlikely Warnock will be the first name that comes to mind.

Jordan may be biased as he has worked with Warnock at Palace and while the 72-year-old has had success throughout his career, he doesn’t exactly represent a move that would suggest that Rangers are building towards the future with the hope of not only catching Celtic but overthrowing them consistently.

Rangers

What is also interesting is the fact that Jordan was eager to criticise the appointment of Beale for Rangers as picking up a manager with little standing in the game having only managed in the Championship. In recent years, Warnock has done little more further up the pyramid than Beale.

Warnock may be capable of improving results quickly at Ibrox and he could lift the immediate mood of the otherwise disgruntled Rangers crowd. But it is an incredibly short-term fix and while it may help things in the coming weeks, it is unlikely to help proceedings too much in the long run.
