Michael Beale confirms he won’t resign after ‘really bad result’ as Rangers beaten at Ibrox by Aberdeen

Michael Beale confirmed he won’t be resigning in the wake of the “really bad” home Rangers defeat by Aberdeen, saying “that’s somebody else’s decision”.

The Gers boss said in his post-match press conference on 30 September, as per Clyde 1 Superscoreboard, that he, his staff, and his players, shared the “frustration and despair” of the fans following the 3-1 reverse at Ibrox.

With the 43-year-old already being tipped for the sack after falling seven points behind Celtic he has vowed to “continue with the job as best as I can” and leave the decision over his future to the Ibrox board.

Beale said: “That’s somebody else’s decision, so all I can do is continue with the job as best as I can.

“I felt today we prepared the team well enough. I thought tactically in the first half what they tried to do we managed to go over and around it.

“We created the chances and ultimately we need to take them so, look, it’s a really bad result today.

“I feel the frustration and despair from the fans because we equally share it inside as staff and players as well, because today in that first half we had enough chances to win that game of football.”

No surprise

Gone are the days when managers would willingly walk away from a pay-off amid mounting pressure so it would probably have been more of a surprise if Beale had resigned.

But how long he will last through the night and the coming days is a major doubt, with the wide assumption outside of the club being that he had to keep winning to keep his job after the defeat to Celtic on 3 September.

All that he now has working in his favour is the large number of injuries that have robbed him of important players, and the fact that John Bennett is clearly going to be reticent to pull the plug so soon after backing the summer rebuild.

Rangers

But there would need to be some pretty clear signs that Beale can be the answer if he is given time, and so far his CV at Ibrox doesn’t suggest that.

There are mitigating circumstances to an extent but, after finishing empty-handed last season and only beating Celtic once the league was lost there needed to be a major improvement this term.

Instead he has arguably gone backwards after reshaping the squad in his image, with three defeats in the league already.

And with Champions League qualification resoundingly missed and performances frustrating those watching on, there is less and less in his favour if the chairman is drawing up a for and against list before deciding on whether to change or not.
