Kris Boyd blasts Cyrield Dessers and Sam Lammers amid ‘Awful’ Rangers injury crisis

Kris Boyd has demanded more from Rangers duo Cyriel Dessers and Sam Lammers as the club deal with an “awful” injury crisis.

Michael Beale splashed around £6m to sign the international strikers from Italian teams as he revamped his forward line, but both have struggled to get their Ibrox careers going since their arrivals.

But with Kemar Roofe and Danilo currently out injured, former striker Boyd has told the Scottish Sun (30 September) that now is the time for them to step up and show fans what they can do.

Rangers

“Dessers and Lammers haven’t exactly set the heather on fire at Rangers. But an awful injury list looks set to hand then a glorious opportunity to ignite their Ibrox careers. Beale shelled out the best part of £6million to bring the pair from Serie A in the summer. So far, the attacking duo haven’t come even remotely close to justifying those fees.

“Yes, it’s still relatively early doors for them, 13 games into what could be a long season — but how long can we keep saying that? Time’s not something you get much of when joining Rangers. And patience is not the greatest virtue of any Scottish football fan.

“Of course you’ll be given a period to settle in, but as we’re approaching October now has to be the time for Lammers and Dessers to show what they’re capable of. They look set for an extended run in the team with Danilo, Cantwell, Dowell, Lawrence, Matondo and now Roofe all crocked.

“Roofe will be the biggest miss for Beale as he’s the only proven goalscorer in his squad. Now the onus will be on Dessers with so many matches coming up in a short period of time if Roofe’s groin injury keeps him out. And who knows? It might just be the making of him.

“Lammers, meanwhile, has one goal in 13 games to date and, while he normally plays behind the main striker, he also needs to weigh in with more. With Cantwell, Lawrence and Dowell out in similar creative roles, he’ll get extra game time. And, just like Dessers, he needs to produce the goods, starting against the Dons.”

Rangers

Now or never

Rangers fans are always supportive of their own, especially when they’re wearing the shirt, but if these two can’t step up now then there will be big question marks about whether they’ll ever be able to.

Both have been given ample opportunity to settle in and show their quality on the pitch and while they’ve done it in spurts, it’s not enough right now.

Kemar Roofe has been consistently good since returning from injury, while Danilo took his opportunity with a goal but suffered a broken face in the process which halted his momentum.

This is now the big chance for Dessers and Lammers to prove why we splashed the cash on them, with big games against Aberdeen, Aris Limassol and St Mirren before the international break to come.

If they can’t do it in these games, with no competition for their place, then fair questions will be asked about if they’ll ever be good enough.
