Chris Sutton hits out at ‘absolutely ridiculous’ Tottenham claim in Rangers and Celtic dispute

Chris Sutton says it is “absolutely ridiculous” to suggest managing Tottenham is easier than taking charge of either Rangers or Celtic, where any result other than a win is considered “disastrous”.

The former Celtic striker made the comment on the It’s All Kicking Off podcast [28 September, 7m 2s] in reference Ange Postecoglou’s impressive start to life at Tottenham.

When host Ian Ladyman claimed there was a leap between managing in the Scottish Premiership and the English Premier League, Sutton used the Old Firm pair as an example as to why that is not necessarily the case.

“Do you think managing Tottenham is easier than managing Celtic or Rangers? That’s ridiculous, absolutely ridiculous,” he said.

“We’re praising Tottenham for a draw at Arsenal last weekend, but if Celtic or Rangers draw it’s a disastrous result.

“There are different pressures. Just because Scottish football doesn’t have the money English football has, it doesn’t lessen the magnitude of a certain job.”

Hounded

The ‘which job is bigger?’ debate is one that has been done many times over when a Rangers or Celtic manager joins an English club.

But if anyone doubts the comments made by Sutton, just look at the pressure current Gers incumbent Michael Beale is under at Ibrox.

Rangers have won four games in a row in all competitions, including victory over Real Betis in the Europa League, yet any sort of slip-up over the coming games could well cost him his job.

Rangers

Failing to win any of the domestic competitions is considered a disaster, which is also the case across the city at Celtic.

Postecoglou will not be hounded at Tottenham if he goes a couple of games without winning, unlike Beale earlier this month following defeats to PSV and Celtic.

That is the type of demand that comes with managing a club like Rangers, in which any failure usually means fierce foes Celtic will instead profit. And nobody wants that.
