Journalist shares damning verdict on Cyriel Dessers amid early Rangers struggles

Derek Clark has shared a damning verdict on Cyriel Dessers after he has failed to impress in his first couple of months at Rangers.

Speaking on the Rangers Review YouTube channel on Wednesday (27 September), the journalist said it was another “cumbersome performance” from the 28-year-old after he came off the bench in the 4-0 win over Livingston in the Viaplay Cup.

He added that it’s almost like watching a centre-back play up front as the Nigeria international has so far “shown nothing” to indicate that he could be the man to fire in the goals for the Gers this season.

“I know that Cyriel Dessers came on, another cumbersome performance for me up top,” said Clark. “If Rangers are relying on Cyriel Dessers to get the goals, fans will start to worry.

“He looks like Connor Goldson being put up front. It’s almost like a centre-half playing up front at this moment in time. I know that may be a bit harsh on Cyriel, but he’s just shown nothing at this moment in time to get fans excited that he’s the answer.”

Not good enough

It’s been a tough start for Dessers at Rangers and, so far, it looks as though he isn’t good enough to play at the standard required for the club.

He has scored three goals in 12 matches, but he has been largely ineffectual in most of those games despite his large presence on the field.

Although it may take some time for the forward to adjust to life at Ibrox, that is a luxury he is unlikely to be afforded due to the injuries to other attacking players in the squad.

Rangers

The Nigeria international simply has to find a way to have more of an influence on games, as Michael Beale is already under pressure to get more out of his summer signings.

After Kemar Roofe was forced off the field with an injury on Wednesday, the Light Blues boss will be hoping it isn’t too serious as his options up top seem to be decreasing with every game that goes by.

In other Rangers news, one star has shared an admission on social media about his injury.
