Steven Naismith raves about ‘brilliant’ Rangers loanee Alex Lowry as ‘big’ admission shared
Steven Naismith has raved about Rangers loanee Alex Lowry after he scored the winning goal for Hearts against Kilmarnock on Tuesday (26 September).
Speaking to PLZ Soccer after the game, the Jambos boss said the 20-year-old midfielder had been “frustrated” at his lack of game time before registering the winner to make it 2-1 in the 92nd minute of the Viaplay Cup clash.
But he added that the Scotland under-21 international has “brilliant ability” and could be “big” for the Edinburgh club if he finds more consistency.
“We need to see good moments, that’s what he needs to be showing,” said Naismith. “He’s been frustrated that he’s not had more game time. But I said to him, just being honest, you need to show good moments and when you’re on the park, you need to give us more.
“Tonight he showed that. The composure, the drag back and then there’s not much of the goal to hit, there are bodies everywhere and he’s found the composure to hit the bottom corner.
“He’s somebody with real confidence, brilliant ability – we just need to get that consistency into him and that’ll be big for us.”
Boost
There is no doubt that Lowry has been one of the highest-rated talents at Rangers over the past few years due to the potential he has shown for the youth sides.
But since scoring his first goal for the Gers against Stirling Albion in January 2022, he hasn’t really kicked on too much, having only made 14 appearances for the senior side.
He joined Hearts over the summer to try and gain some regular first-team football, but he hasn’t quite hit the heights at Tynecastle just yet.

Perhaps scoring the winning goal – his first for the club – will provide the midfielder with the boost he needs to try and nail down a regular spot in the starting lineup over the course of the next few matches.
There will be plenty of interested eyes at Ibrox looking to see how he gets on in Edinburgh this season, with a view to him potentially being a big player for the Light Blues further down the line.
