Sam Lammers cannot take blame in ‘unacceptable’ Rangers win v Motherwell, 100% man led by example

Rangers were nowhere near the best against Motherwell on Sunday (24 September), but they still left Ibrox with all three points.

Cyriel Dessers found the only goal of the game in the 1-0 win for Michael Beale’s side, who now sit third in the Scottish Premiership table.

One positive is certainly the defensive side of things, with the Gers keeping a third successive clean sheet. But one negative is undoubtedly the struggles of various attackers, with the only goal against Motherwell coming via an unintentional deflection.

Summer signing Sam Lammers was among those failing to truly showcase his goalscoring ability at Ibrox. But the striker can definitely hold his head high after the match, having really given it his all during his 79 minutes on the pitch, something he alluded to post-match.

“I had opportunities to score,” said Lammers, as quoted by the Daily Record (25 September). “I tried to create for the team, to start attacks.

“On a lot of occasions this worked well but I had a few opportunities to score myself so I am a little disappointed this didn’t work out.”

The forward’s figures from the game absolutely back that verdict up, with Lammers registering four shots on target, one off target and three blocked, as per SofaScore.

Furthermore, the summer arrival registered an 85% pass success rate, with two of those passes being key, while he also won his only aerial duel (100%), along with four of his eight ground duels.

Lammers may have given plenty during the important league clash, but Rangers manager Beale did not have time to consider individual performances as he slammed his entire team.

“From the first minute onwards I was unhappy with the team,” said Beale, as quoted by Sky Sports (24 September). “The unforced errors with the ball are unacceptable for players playing here. That performance was a really poor one.”

It seems, however, that such a verdict was not reserved for Lammers, with Beale also noting [Daily Record, 25 September]: “I didn’t think the service they (the strikers) got today was great at times.

“I felt early in the game that every time we made a forward pass we gave it away. I’m looking for more from this group of players, they know that.”

Lammers should have mixed feelings following his display, with the striker set to be pleased by his efforts, but also frustrated at not finding the back of the net, something he has to do sooner rather than later in order to avoid any backlash from his manager or indeed supporters of the club.
