Cyriel Dessers eyes Rangers silverware following history lesson from Michael Beale

Cyriel Dessers has revealed his desire to win silverware with Rangers, following a trip to the Light Blues museum at New Edmonton House.

The Nigerian forward has had a rocky start to life at Ibrox but scored his first goal of the Scottish Premiership season against Motherwell on Sunday (24 September), even if it was courtesy of a rather fortunate deflection.

But Dessers has insisted the players have been left inspired by Michael Beale’s decision to show them the successful history of Rangers and with their clash with Livingston in the Viaplay Cup on Wednesday (27 September), the striker is eyeing some of his own history.

Rangers

As quoted by Football Scotland (25 September) he said: “When you see the museum and the history of this club it inspires you. When you see the trophies there it makes you dream a little bit that hopefully you can lift one for Rangers one day. It’s been a while since Rangers won this cup, so that would be amazing.

“We still have some games to go to get to the final, so we know the importance of Wednesday night. Hopefully we can get the win. If early in the season you can lift silverware, that would give us all a massive boost. That is what we are all in football for.

“There is always pressure in a big club like Rangers, not just for the manager, but for the players as well. I think he handles it well. I work hard every day and I will keep pushing and keep working. I will wait for my moment and when my moment is there I will show it on the pitch. It’s all about that in football.”

Inspired

You can criticise Dessers all you want for his performances so far in a Rangers shirt, but what is undoubtedly clear is that both he and the other new signings, have been given and have a very clear idea, of just what sort of pressure comes with being a Rangers player.

Whether it be via the boos that have rung around Ibrox at times this season or a look at the history of the Light Blues, they have been shown just how high the expectations are at this football club and now they have to match those levels.

The Nigerian forward has three goals and three assists in 11 appearances since arriving at Ibrox, so on paper, he has performed fairly well, but the numbers don’t tell the whole story, as the 28-year-old has looked sloppy and off of the pace in multiple games this season.

However, the Viapay Cup offers a chance for everyone in Beale’s side to lift the pressure ever so slightly. A trophy will ensure the calls for the manager to be sacked lessen, while a couple of important goals for Dessers could ensure the fans show more faith in the striker.

The opportunity to make some more history at Ibrox must inspire Dessers and his teammates, rather than intimidate them.
