Alan Shearer delivers Europe verdict on Rangers, Liverpool, West Ham and Brighton
Alan Shearer sees Liverpool going the furthest in Europe over Rangers, Brighton and West Ham when quizzed about it post matchday one.
Gary Lineker was in a discussion with the decorated ex England striker and he backed the 2019 Champions League winners.
The Reds are in the Europa League this season after a number of years as they finished outside the Premier League top four last season.
Lineker was speaking on the Rest is Football Podcast, and with a number of English clubs participating, he had acknowledgement for Rangers too. He asked Alan Shearer: “Here’s a question for you, who’s going to go furthest in the Europa League, Liverpool, Brighton, West Ham, or even Rangers?”
To which Shearer responded: “You’d have to fancy Liverpool, wouldn’t you?
“Didn’t play particularly well, they can’t keep doing that as eventually, that will bite them (having to come from behind). I think with the opposition they have gone behind, other than Newcastle, they’ve been allowed to get back into the game.
“They won’t be allowed to do that with better opposition. So that is one thing they have to improve on but I would think they will go far in the competition, they have to with that squad.”
Fair enough
Last season, Liverpool humiliated Rangers in the Champions League and there’s no denying who the better team on paper is.
The Reds also play in the Premier League so that’s a completely different playing field than the SPFL.
The broadcasting revenues in Scotland are a pittance compared to what they are in the Premier League.
So, in terms of signing players, Gers’ entire transfer budget may be what Liverpool spend on bringing in one new player through the door.
However, the luck of the draw is a major factor in the knockout rounds and if Rangers get a favourable run, they could go further than Liverpool.
Right now, Michael Beale and co will just be taking it one game at a time.
