Todd Cantwell and Kieran Dowell ‘In a Brace’ after recent knee injuries, won’t play for Rangers again this month

Michael Beale has revealed that Kieran Dowell and Todd Cantwell both have their legs in a brace and won’t play for Rangers again this month.

The midfield duo were both ruled out of the weekend clash with St Johnstone by the boss during his pre-game press conference on Friday (15 September).

But when asked for details on the injuries, Beale revealed both have knee issues and have been in a brace over the international break.

Rangers Kieran Dowell

“Something with his knee picked up in a challenge towards the end of the game,” he said about Cantwell.

“He played on, we had to send him for a scan and thought it would be worse than it is, the initial diagnosis, so we’re probably two or one and a half weeks into that.

“A strange reaction with his [Dowell] knee, he and Todd have had their legs in a brace for the last week or so.

“Kieran is out jogging but we need to see how that goes and I’d say he’s three or four weeks away as well.”

Yikes

For both Cantwell and Dowell to have been in a knee brace over the international break suggests that their injuries are not good or small things.

Cantwell played on despite suffering the problem against Celtic and while that’s admirable, it’s possible that he did more damage to himself and with seven games in the next 22 days he is going to be a massive miss for the club.

As for Dowell, he would have been keen to make an impression in the upcoming league games after being left out of the Europa League squad – meaning he can only play domestic football until 2024.

The good news is that Beale expects both players to return in the next 3-4 weeks which means while they miss a big run of fixtures, they hopefully will be back relatively soon in order to help the team achieve their goals.

For now though we have to hope there are no setbacks or that Beale isn’t fibbing about the severity of the problems because we need all of our best players available.
