Rangers explored summer deal to sign Leeds United ace Jamie Shackleton

Rangers explored the possibility of signing Leeds United midfielder Jamie Shackleton over the summer, according to Phil Hay.

The Atheltic journalist reported on Thursday (14 September) that the Gers were interested in the 23-year-old, but a move never managed to develop.

The Light Blues were linked with a number of players throughout the transfer window as Michael Beale looked to revamp his squad at Ibrox.

Versatile

A move for Shackleton could have perhaps been a decent addition for Rangers as he can play as either a defensive midfielder or in either of the fullback positions.

That kind of versatility would have provided Beale with some necessary cover in a couple of areas as they appear to be short in the middle of the park and another defensive option would have been welcome.

Hay said new Leeds boss Daniel Farke was also looking at the start of the summer to offload the Englishman, who spent last season on loan at Millwall.

But he has now forced his way into the German’s plans, having played in six matches already this season and starting in five of those games.

With midfielder Glen Kamara making the switch from the Gers to Elland Road, perhaps a move for Shackleton could have been included as part of that deal, but the club clearly missed out on that opportunity.

In other Rangers news, Chris Jack has revealed the one position where the Gers are “crying out” for a new signing.
