Rangers to strike gold by signing Lewis Ferguson as Ibrox transfer suggestion emerges

Rangers could strike gold by signing Lewis Ferguson from Bologna after he has been suggested to the club.

Speaking on Go Radio on 8 September, his uncle Barry Ferguson said he was disappointed that the Gers didn’t make a move for the 24-year-old Scotland international over the summer.

The all-action midfielder could still be an excellent signing for the Light Blues, though, after he had an impressive first campaign in Serie A with Bologna.

Rangers

Ferguson has actually previously slipped through Rangers’ grasp after he joined the club’s academy all the way back in 2009.

But after four years in Glasgow, he then made the move to Hamilton, where he went on to make his professional debut in 2018.

Following some impressive performances for the Accies, he quickly signed for Aberdeen and went on to make himself a regular fixture in the starting lineup at Pittodrie.

The midfielder scored 37 goals and laid on 23 assists in 169 appearances, while he also earned his first call-up for Scotland for a game against Denmark in 2021.

Ferguson’s form in the SPFL for the Dons then led to him making a surprise move to Bologna for £3million last summer as he looked to make a name for himself abroad.

He has so far done an excellent job of doing that after scoring seven goals in 32 appearances in Serie A last season before backing that up with a goal and an assist in his opening four games of this campaign.

The midfielder’s uncle said he has “come on leaps and bounds as a footballer” in recent times as his “overall game has improved”.

“You know what the Italians are like,” said Ferguson. “I have played with Italians and they go on about how they are coached over there. His positional sense on the pitch is a lot better now than it was at Aberdeen. If he produces, similar to Hickey, then teams are going to look at him.”

But the former Gers captain admitted he is “disappointed” that the club “didn’t show any interest” in signing him on the back of his performances in Italy.

“I was surprised because I thought he was really good for Aberdeen. Sometimes he never played in his favoured position. He was more of a holding midfielder then.

“I like him further forward. Let him off the leash a little. A bit like John McGinn. Getting into people’s faces and getting into the box, then when he plays that position, he is a real threat. It frustrates me, at times, when a former club (Rangers) doesn’t look at guys like Lewis.”

The Light Blues could really do with a player like Ferguson at the moment in time after they have been accused of lacking creativity in midfield despite making a number of signings during the transfer window.

Given his links to the club, however, this could be a deal they explore further down the line as he would likely be very interested in a move to Ibrox.

But they must be careful not to miss out on him again as other sides could soon come knocking if he continues to impress for Bologna this season.

In other Rangers news, Chris Jack has already shared an exit development about one new signing.
