Ally McCoist reveals Walter Smith as favourite manager, Rangers legend ‘different class’

Ally McCoist has revealed that legendary Rangers boss Walter Smith is the best manager he’s worked with “by a considerable distance.”

Speaking to talkSPORT BET (10 September), McCoist placed him atop a long list of bosses whom he worked with after the pair won seven Scottish titles between 1991 and 1997.

McCoist shared with Alan Brazil that the “different class” Smith was McCoist’s manager at Scottish youth level before taking the dugout at Ibrox in 1991.

Speaking to talkSPORT BET, McCoist said: “Mine was definitely Walter [Smith] by a considerable distance. I first came across Walter, believe it or not, in the Scottish youth team.

“Our first trip was Monaco, and Walter was manager of the youth team. Obviously, he was at [Dundee] United, came to Rangers.

“Different class.”

Top praise

McCoist was a part of the legendary Rangers side that won seven consecutive league titles under the management of Walter Smith.

Rangers are currently struggling with form in the league and look a very long way from reaching the heights met by Smith’s Gers’ sides, but of course, football was much different back then.

Celtic have changed their fortunes in the league since the turn of the century and have won 18 of the 26 titles up for grabs since then, with the Gers claiming the rest.

While the Ibrox faithful are currently negotiating the issues of their current side, beckoning back to better days can cushion the blow of a tough start to the season, if only briefly.

Smith is considered one of Rangers’ all-time greats, so McCoist’s praise here is clearly well-placed.
