Rangers in multi-million net spend once agent fees considered – Chris Jack

Rangers will have a net spend “close to” £6million this summer once agent fees have been taken into account, according to Chris Jack.

Writing for the Rangers Review (8 September), Jack suggests that while the Gers have been successful in selling off players, including Glen Kamara to Leeds United for £5million, they were unable to become “profitable in player trading” this window.

With Alfredo Morelos and Ryan Kent departing Ibrox for free, Bennet and the board had to “underwrite Michael Beale’s recruitment blueprint”, leaving them with a multi-million net spend.

Healthy

Considering the high volume of signings that have been brought into the club this summer, a net spend of £6million feels quite healthy for the Gers.

A huge rebuild was on the cards at the start of the summer, and on paper, it was a huge success. While on the field it hasn’t exactly kicked on yet, Beale, John Bennet and the Rangers hierarchy did a good job considering the significant amount of outgoings.

Kamara’s £5million move to Elland Road, Fashion Sakala’s move to Saudi Arabia for an undisclosed fee and Antonio Colak’s £2.5million move to Parma brought in a decent amount of funds and freed up the wage bill.

Rangers

Losing the likes of Morelos and Kent as well as Filip Helander and Scott Arfield for free was not ideal and perhaps the club should have been more proactive in hindsight, but clubs often lose players for free. If the club can ensure these types of players are sold rather than let go, they can build a safer financial future.

Rangers made nine permanent signings this summer but only paid fees for four, Danilo, Sam Lammers, Cyriel Dessers and Jose Cifuentes, which came to £14.2million.

They were exceptional in the free agent market, bringing in Jack Butland, who has saved them on multiple occasions, and the likes of Dujon Sterling.

With the relatively low funds compared to the Premier League and abroad, Rangers have been very shrewd in their business this summer. The next step? Make it shrewd on the pitch.

In other Rangers news, Kenny Miller has questioned a “crazy” potential behind-the-scenes development at Ibrox.
