Dinamo Zagreb line up Iago as Borna Barisic set for Rangers stay

Dinamo Zagreb have lined up a move for Augsburg left-back Iago as an alternative to Rangers defender Borna Barisic, according to Germanijak.

The Croatian news outlet reported on its website on Thursday [7 September] that a deal for Iago should be finalised before the transfer window closes for Dinamo on Friday [8 September].

The same outlet had reported on Wednesday [6 September] that Barisic was a target for the Croatian heavyweights, but they accepted they would not be able to strike a deal with Rangers before the deadline.

However, Barisic is said to remain on Dinamo’s radar ahead of the window reopening in January, with Iago viewed as “only a B option”.

Time to cash in?

Barisic is due to be out of contract at Ibrox at the end of the season, so cashing in on a player who some will feel is not good enough to be a regular starter makes sense.

Doing so now, though, would leave Rangers short in a troublesome area, with their shortcomings there laid bare in the defeat to Celtic last weekend.

There has been talk of the Croatia international possibly extending his deal with the Gers, which also would not be a bad thing. After all, it means his transfer value will shoot up.

The fact that Zagreb are still targeting Barisic despite supposedly closing in on Iago says a lot about how much they want their former player back at Stadion Maksimir.

It is fair to say at this point that nothing will happen over the next 24 hours or so, but this is certainly a story to keep an eye on over the coming weeks.

In other Rangers news, a Barisic development over the international break is unlikely to have gone down well with Gers fans.
