Barry Ferguson tells Todd Cantwell to ‘do talking on the pitch’ after Old Firm loss apology

Barry Ferguson has blasted Todd Cantwell’s social media apology following Rangers’ Old Firm defeat.

As reported by FootballScotland (6 September), Ferguson claimed that the 25-year-old should do his “talking on the pitch” after the Englishman expressed his apologies for the Gers’ poor start to the season.

Ferguson did not hold back in his criticism of Cantwell’s decision to take to Instagram to face the fans, claiming he should “keep [himself] quiet” and perform in the Gers’ next game.

Speaking on The Go Radio Show, as quoted by FootballScotland, Ferguson said: “See things like [Cantwell’s post]. Forget about it. Go and do your talking on the pitch. I’m sure if you ask any Rangers fans – I get that social media has its place for players, it’s good for a lot of things – but do the talking on the pitch and that comes in the next game against St Johnstone.

“Fans aren’t daft, they want to see performances on the pitch and that’s what they expect and demand. I get it is now the way with social media, but just keep yourself quiet and turn up at McDiarmid Park and skud them three or four nothing and get three points.”

Damning

Rangers players are perhaps one of the most criticised groups of players in world football. They know the pressure that comes with wearing the shirt, but Cantwell’s apology is hopefully the start of a resurgence at Ibrox.

The Englishman said it himself in his post: “We need actions not words.” Rangers face St Johnstone after the international break – the perfect opportunity to bounce back after the double heartache of their Champions League exit and Old Firm loss.

While the Gers may have felt unlucky to leave Ibrox with nothing against Brendan Rodgers’ men, considering their disallowed goals, the fact remains that Michael Beale’s side was not good enough on the day. Blame has been aimed in all directions: Beale, the new signings, the defence and so on.

Ferguson may be slightly harsh on Cantwell though. While many have struggled to get going for the Gers this season, Cantwell has been a predictably and relatively reliable operator for Beale and has put in a good shift in most of his performances this season.

That being said, Ferguson is famous for his passion for Rangers and his love for the Old Firm derby, so his misgivings towards Cantwell are understandable considering the current state of the club.

Things need to change at Ibrox. The international break could not have come at a more convenient time. Fans will be looking to the likes of Cantwell to help steer the ship back on course, quickly.
