Fresh twist in Borna Barisic transfer news as Dinamo Zagred linked to Rangers defender

Borna Barisic will not be leaving Rangers to join Dinamo Zagreb this month and is expected to see out his contract, according to Mark McDougall.

Writing on his personal Twitter account (6 September), the Football Scotland journalist reports that there is “no truth” to reports linking the Croatia international back to his homeland before Friday’s deadline or even in January.

Barisic is currently out of contract next summer but McDougall reports that he could pen a new deal at Ibrox that would see him extend his stay at the club beyond that.

“Believe there’s no truth in the reports in Croatia linking Borna Barisic with a move to Dinamo Zagreb,” he wrote.

“Will see out the final year of his contract at Rangers and could still potentially sign a new deal too.”

Shame

It’s a shame that the club haven’t seen such a clear opportunity to cash in and upgrade on what has been a problem position for years.

Barisic has been a fine servant and there is no doubting that he gives his all almost every time he puts on a Rangers shirt, but his best simply isn’t good enough at this point and that has been proven several times over.

Rangers

With Barisic out of contract next summer this is the perfect chance to cash in, ideally in January, and look to improve on the position either with competition for Ridvan Yilmaz or to directly replace him as first-choice.

But instead we’re likely to give him a new deal despite him proving that he isn’t the required level, meaning we’ll have him as he gets older and worse and won’t have space in the squad to replace him.

It’s worrying that fans can see it for a long time and yet the club and management don’t, to the point where it can effect our performances and results.
