Barry Ferguson rages at Rangers controversy, ‘it’s a shocker’

Barry Ferguson has labelled the decision to rule out the Rangers goal against Celtic on Sunday (3 September) as a “shocker”.

Speaking on The Go Radio Football Show on Tuesday (5 September), the former Gers captain urged the SPFL to “let the referees ref the games” after Kemar Roofe saw his goal chalked off for a foul in the build-up following a VAR check.

He said he has watched the footage a number of times and still believes it is a “shocker of a decision” after Cyriel Dessers was adjudged to have fouled Gustaf Lagerbielke.

“Let the referees ref the games,” said Ferguson. “Don Robertson is in a perfect position, he sees it and lets the play move on. Obviously, Dessers moves into the box, cuts it back and it’s a goal.

“I’ve watched it a number of times and I think it’s a shocker of a decision.”

Clear and obvious

There doesn’t appear to be much doubt about the fact that the decision to disallow the Rangers goal in the Old Firm game was a mistake by the officials.

There have been a number of onlookers who have come out and said that the goal should have been given, including many who are of a Celtic persuasion.

The key thing is that it wasn’t a clear and obviously error by the referee to allow the goal initially as the response to the decision over the past few days has shown.

It won’t, however, provide the Gers with any comfort to hear from so many people that it should have stood as it will just add to their frustrations.

The Light Blues now have to move on from the incident, though, as nothing is going to change and they’re under increasing pressure following the defeats to PSV and Celtic over the past week.
