Alfredo Morelos and agent will ‘wince’ at Rangers career decisions amid confirmed contract news – Jonny McFarlane

Alfredo Morelos will “look back when he’s older and wince” at how his time at Rangers ended after his next move was confirmed, according to Jonny McFarlane.

The Rangers Review journalist reacted via Twitter on Monday (4 September) to the news that the Colombian striker has signed a two year deal with Brazilian side Santos as a free agent with dismay at the money the 27-year-old could have got upon departing Ibrox a different way.

Morelos left the Light Blues this summer after his contract expired and went unsigned throughout the transfer window, despite 124 goals with the club over the past six seasons.

McFarlane said: “A two year contract. On a free. Aged 27. He will look back when he’s older and wince how he and his agent have handled the last four years.

“He could have earned far more.”

Disappointment

Santos are a world-famous club but the recent developments in Morelos’ career do feel like a far cry from what many would have expected in recent years, including him.

On his day he was unplayable for Rangers, but despite frequent transfer links he remained at Ibrox until this summer by which point his standing at the club had somewhat fizzled out, even as Michael Beale still often preferred him last term.

A free agent payday has clearly eluded the striker and even Santos appear to be giving him a “prove it” deal for just a couple of seasons.

Rangers

If he performs well enough he may get one last chance at a big contract elsewhere, but there is an inescapable feeling of “what might have been” for the Colombian and for Rangers.

A year ago would have arguably been the ideal point for him to leave Glasgow with big money to himself and the Gers, but an injury picked up on a needless international call-up where he wasn’t handed a minute of game time put paid to that.

With Rangers struggling up top despite Beale’s big-money overhaul this summer it wouldn’t be a shock for Morelos to feel all the more missed, but now he is in Brazil and finally has the next step of his career sorted, even if it wasn’t the one many expected.

In other Rangers news, Chris Sutton had a sarcastic reaction as the Light Blues are set to take action of controversy in the Old Firm derby.
