Stephen McGowan calls for parliamentary inquiry after Rangers embarrassment

Stephen McGowan has called for a “parliamentary inquiry” after Rangers were involved in a Scottish meltdown in European football this week.

Rangers, Hibernian, Hearts and Aberdeen all lost in their European playoffs, with the aggregate score standing at 15-2, which is simply not acceptable.

The Scottish Daily Mail journalist insisted that mediocre results in Europe for Scottish clubs are so common that no one really cares about the outcome anyway.

McGowan wrote in his Scottish Daily Mail column [The Verdict, pg 6, 2 September], “It’s not been a good week for Scottish clubs in Europe. Nor, for that matter, an unusual one.

“An aggregate scoreline of 15-2 against Aberdeen, Hearts, Hibs and Rangers should probably trigger a parliamentary inquiry. Mediocre results in European qualifiers are now so common, the actual reaction is a collective shrug.”

Rangers

Not good enough.

Michael Beale accepted blame, but after the successes of years gone by, this was simply a catastrophe on the road in Holland against PSV.

Some of the goals were actually laughable and it isn’t as though the sheer class on show was the only reason why Rangers won’t be in the Champions League.

The Europa League beckons, and getting to the knockout stages is simply a minimum, especially when our last trip into that tournament ended in the final.

Hearts, Hibernian, Aberdeen and even Celtic for that matter have been dragged up the coefficient by Rangers in recent years, and none of them can disagree with that.

With that being said though, that can’t be used as an excuse and the Bears need to look after themselves much better on these big occasions, hopefully, that happens in the Europa League.
