Chris Sutton makes admission after controversial first-half incident in Rangers v Celtic
Chris Sutton has shared an admission about the goal Rangers had ruled out in the first half against Celtic on Sunday (3 September).
The former Hoops forward tweeted at half-time of the Old Firm clash that his former side “may have got away with one” after Kemar Roofe’s strike was ruled out, but added that it could have gone either way.
In the build-up to the Gers attacker finding the back of the net, Cyriel Dessers was adjudged to have fouled Gustaf Lagerbielke before laying the ball off to his teammate, with the referee eventually ruling the goal out following a VAR check.
“Some finish from Kyogo,” said Sutton via his personal Twitter account.
“Celtic by far the better team.
“In truth, Celtic may have got away with one after Dessers was adjudged to foul Lagerbielke… Could go either way.”
Surprising
It’s surprising to see Sutton actually give an honest opinion on the goal that was disallowed as he is usually very biased towards Celtic when there’s a controversial decision.
The pundit appears to have changed his mind on the referee’s call after he previously suggested that Dessers had committed a foul in his co-commentary duties for Sky Sports immediately after the incident took place.
Given the debate around whether it was a foul or not, that means it surely falls into the category of not being “clear and obvious”, so you would expect the official to stick with his on-field decision.

It appeared as though Lagerbielke waited for the contact from the Nigerian forward and then went down very easily before quickly getting up to try and make up for his mistake.
There is no doubt that it’s an incident that will be hotly debated for a while to come as errors of this magnitude can’t afford to be made when the stakes are so high.
In other Rangers news, a pundit has urged the club to make upgrades to their squad as one star is named.
