Rangers transfer news as Stephen McGowan shares £10m+ Ibrox verdict

Rangers transfer business this summer has been deemed “uninspiring”, by Stephen McGowan, despite the Ibrox club spending more than £10million.

The Ibrox club had an incredibly busy summer window, with nine players arriving in Glasgow as Michael Beale attempted to revolutionise his Rangers side in the hope of overthrowing Celtic’s dominance in the Scottish Premiership.

But the Gers’ drubbing in the Champions League play-off against PSV has left a sour taste in the mouth of most at Ibrox and McGowan believes that the Gers have spent their money poorly throughout the entire transfer window.

Writing in the Scottish Daily Mail (2 September, page 6), he said: “Strip it down and these are two underwhelming teams. A summer of uninspiring deals in the transfer market has left them fragile and weakened.

“A spend of £13m to £15m might not buy you much these days. In the context of Scottish football, however, it’s still a huge outlay if the money is spent badly. There’s scant evidence right now to suggest it’s been spent well.”

Worrying feeling

There is a feeling that Beale is yet to see the fruit of his labours in the transfer market this summer, with Rangers not playing in a manner that would suggest they had invested heavily so far this season and they have put in fairly indifferent performances domestically.

The heavy defeat to PSV has meant that many inside Ibrox are rightly despondent heading into the Old Firm clash with Celtic, but it may well be naive to already right off the business completed by the Light Blues so early in the season.

After all, the transfer window has only just closed and the huge turnover of players at Ibrox means that it will take time for all the new arrivals to settle and begin to gel with one another before better performances are seen on the pitch.

If Beale’s side can get the better of Brendan Rodgers’ Celtic, it will bring a feeling of greater positivity to the blue side of Glasgow and it will only take a couple of goals from the likes of Cyriel Desserrs and Danilo for the money invested this summer to be deemed a sensible investment.

Hopefully, the Old Firm will be the start of a period of positivity for Rangers.
