Early Rangers team news v Celtic emerges on BBC Sport

Rangers midfielder Kieran Dowell is touch and go to be available for the first Old Firm of the season against Celtic on Sunday 3 September, according to the BBC.

The summer signing missed the Champions League qualifier defeat against PSV Eindhoven in midweek after picking up a knee injury.

Borna Barisic was forced off in that defeat in Holland but should shake that off to be available for Michael Beale, despite a shocking Old Firm reputation recently.

Kemar Roofe is also available for selection alongside Tom Lawrence, with both back in the squad after being ineligible in the Champions League.

Beale now has a selection headache, with Dowell potentially the only absentee with plenty of changes certainly on the cards after the latest European embarrassment.

Decisions.

Beale will have been racking his head for ideas all week since that crushing defeat against PSV, with plenty of questions arising at the biggest moment.

There is no time to feel sorry for ourselves though, and one big game is followed by a potentially bigger one with Celtic coming to town.

Rangers know that a huge win in this one changes everything, and team selection will be key behind that with Celtic going through their own problems at this moment.

The league slipped away from Ibrox far too early last season, and it is time for the shoe to be on the other foot this time around with no excuses if Dowell is the only one to miss out.

Roofe and the likes of Rabbi Matondo will be pushing for a start, that is for sure, and regardless of the fitness of Barisic, he may drop out anyway.

All eyes are already on Ibrox, three points or nothing.

In other Rangers news, Chris Sutton has delivered his Michael Beale sack verdict ahead of Sunday’s crucial Old Firm encounter.
