Tom English blasts ‘mortifying’ Rangers in instant reaction to 5-1 defeat v PSV

BBC Scotland journalist Tom English has relayed just how terrible Rangers’ European record has been since they reached the 2021/2022 Europa League final.

On Wednesday night, the Gers lost 5-1 away at PSV in the Champions League play-off qualifier, meaning that they lost 7-3 on aggregate and will be playing in the Europa League group stages after the upcoming international break.

Their performances since that defeat to Frankfurt in Seville have been woeful and English has suggested that the main cause of the form is the Gers’ defence.

Rangers

“Mortifying night for Rangers, 5-1 going on plenty more,” said English via his personal Twitter account on Wednesday night (30 August).

“Since the Europa League final they’ve played 14 European games and have won only two of them. Thirty-five goals conceded! They’ve conceded three or more on six different occasions.

“Wonder what the main problem is…”

Mortifying, indeed

Rangers’ performances in Europe over the last 12 months have been embarrassing for the club and for Scottish football in general.

It’s hard for us to harp on about reaching a Europa League final now we have the tag of being the worst-performing side in Champions League history.

We got lucky reaching the groups last season and this term, PSV showed that they’re a class above.

It also showed that Giovanni van Bronckhorst and his side of last season were a class above Michael Beale and this bunch of players, which perhaps makes it a good thing we dropped into the Europa League.

In Europe’s second competition, we have way more chance of being competitive.

We’ll be in pot two for the draw as it stands, along with Sporting CP, Marseille, Real Betis and more.

Pot one is strong and will include Liverpool so hopefully we can avoid them and yet another humiliation on the European scene.

In other Rangers news, Ally McCoist was wowed by this “unbelievable” player despite the defeat at PSV.
