Kris Boyd shares damning Rangers verdict after being ‘demolished’ in defeat v PSV
Kris Boyd has delivered his damning verdict on Rangers after they were comfortably beaten by PSV in their Champions League qualifier on Wednesday (30 August).
Speaking on Sky Sports after the Gers’ 5-1 defeat to the Dutch side, the pundit said they were completely outclassed and were “demolished” as they will now play in the Europa League this season.
He added that there will be excuses made about the finances of the two clubs, but claims there can be no excuses after the budgets remain the same from when the Light Blues won 1-0 in Eindhoven during the last campaign.
“The excuses will come in terms of the finances and everything,” said Boyd. “It was the exact same as last year – you can’t use that.
“The gulf in class tonight was there for everyone to see. PSV had an arrogance about them after the first game and you felt as though they thought the tie was already done. They showed why after they went back home with a spring in their step, arrogance, and confidence and they’ve absolutely demolished Rangers tonight.
“People will come out and say the Champions League is a step above and we saw that last season when they were there, but it’s not to say Rangers can’t go in there and compete at that level and then drop back down into the Europa League.
“But they were totally and utterly annihilated in the Netherlands tonight and it’ll be the Europa League”.
Harsh reality
The harsh reality is that Rangers were so far off the pace and PSV completely deserved their handsome victory following their performance over the course of the two legs.
Boyd is right in his assessment of the Gers’ display in Eindhoven as there did appear to be a huge gulf in class between the two sides and that should be a worry for Michael Beale.
The Light Blues boss has been allowed to bring in a number of new signings this summer and, across the tie, they didn’t look up to European standard.

There can be no excuses in terms of finances after they proved at the beginning of last season under Giovanni van Bronckhorst that they can go and mix it at that level if they get things right on the pitch.
It’s now just a matter of seeing how that result will impact the players heading into the Old Firm at Ibrox on Saturday (2 September) and whether playing Thursday night football in the Europa League could take its toll as the campaign goes on.
In other Rangers news, Ally McCoist was far from impressed with what one player did against PSV.
