BBC pundit loses mind over ‘ridiculous’ James Tavernier after Rangers win v Ross County

Neil McCann joked he is “sick of talking about” James Tavernier after the Rangers captain scored a “ridiculous” goal in the 2-0 win at Ross County.

Tavernier intercepted a pass inside his own half, carried the ball forward and sent a shot looping over the head of Ross Laidlaw from 20 yards out in Saturday’s [26 August] Scottish Premiership clash.

The right-back has now scored 63 goals for Rangers in the Scottish Premiership since the start of the 2017-18 campaign.

Analysing the goal against Ross County for BBC Sportscene [26 August, 41m 58s], McCann said: “I’m sick of talking about this guy!

“First of all, it was really poor from Ross County, getting caught with a square pass. But [Tavernier] has so much to do.

“When he checks inside, we’re used to seeing him whip in dead balls.

“Here, for a ball on the forward motion, to propel it in the same motion and get it up and down… it’s ridiculous.”

Prolific

“Ridiculous” is certainly one way of describing Tavernier’s first-half strike against Ross County, helping to cement a 2-0 victory for his side in Dingwall.

As poor as the defending was, the technique Tavernier used was rather unique and left Laidlaw with little chance of keeping out the effort.

The 31-year-old continues to score at an incredible rate for Rangers, with this already his third goal of the campaign in all competitions.

The other two goals came against Servette in Champions League qualifying – one a penalty and the other a back-post header.

Tavernier may be a defender by trade, but he certainly knows how to pop up with some crucial goals for Michael Beale’s men.

Whether it is a close-range finish, a set-piece or a belter like we saw against the Staggies, Tavernier has every type of finish in his locker.

And you can bet that his goal against Ross County will not be the last he scores this season.

In other Rangers news, Beale has revealed a source of “big frustration” he has encountered at Ibrox.
