Ianis Hagi to leave Scotland on Sunday to complete Rangers loan exit

Ianis Hagi is set to depart Rangers and play on loan at La Liga side Alaves, according to Spanish journalist Matteo Moretto.

He reported on Twitter on Saturday (26 August) that the Romanian international is set to travel on Sunday (27 August) to complete the loan move after falling out of favour at Ibrox.

The 24-year-old made 99 appearances for the Gers across four seasons, scoring 16 goals including a season-high eight in Rangers’ title-winning season.

Departed

Hagi was expected to leave Rangers this summer, with the 19-year-old himself expressing his discontent about a lack of game time.

As quoted by FootballScotland (19 August), Hagi said: “Look, I think every football player wants to play. I’m obviously disappointed with the situation that I’m in but I respect the gaffer’s decisions.”

Now he will hope to earn more game time in Spain with his loan move to Alavez set to be completed. Hagi joined the Gers with high expectations, but never managed to cement himself as a regular starter across his four years.

Injury struggles kept Romania out the side, with a knee injury forcing him on the sidelines for over a year, missing 69 games for Rangers. [TransferMarkt]

Following a significant overhaul of the squad this summer too, Hagi would have struggled to find himself a place back in the squad a move to the newly-promoted Alavez could prove a good next step in the young player’s career.

His time at Rangers has been no failure, however. He was a significant part of the historic league-winning side in 2020/21 under Steven Gerrard where the Gers prevented arch-rivals Celtic from securing a tenth successive Scottish title.

Rangers fans may keep an eye on Hagi in his La Liga debut season, but will quickly turn their attention to their upcoming potentially season-defining fixtures against PSV and Celtic in the next week.

In other Rangers news, Chris Sutton has made an “astonishing” claim about the Gers Champions League campaign.
