Rangers confirm Nnamdi Ofoborh Ibrox exit, contract mutually terminated

Rangers have confirmed the exit of Nnamdi Ofoborh after it was agreed to mutually terminate his contract.

The midfielder signed a four-year pre-contract with the Gers in February 2021 after he opted to leave now Premier League side Bournemouth.

However, a heart issue was discovered not long after his switch to Ibrox (Glasgow Times, 16 March), a problem that prevented him from making a senior appearance for the club.

A short statement on Rangers’ official website confirmed Ofoborh is now going to pursue a new career.

“Rangers can today announce that the club and Nnamdi Ofoborh have mutually agreed to end his contract,” the statement read.

“The midfielder, who joined Rangers at the start of 2021-22 season has opted to pursue a career elsewhere.

“Everyone at Rangers wishes Nnamdi all the very best of luck for the future.”

A sad end

There was plenty of optimism around the signing of Nnamdi Ofoborh when he agreed to leave Bournemouth for the Glasgow giants over two years ago.

He had already made a handful of senior appearances for Bournemouth and enjoyed a couple of loan spells at Wycombe Wanderers.

Sadly, though, a medical issue has prevented him from fulfilling that early hope and it is hugely regretful that a talented young man has had to step away from the game.

It goes without saying that everyone involved at Rangers, from the boardroom to the terraces, will wish the 23-year-old well in whatever the future holds.

Ofoborh had come through the youth ranks at Millwall initially before moving to the south coast with Bournemouth, while has also represented Nigeria at Under-20 level.

While the news announced on Thursday (August 24) is not what anyone would have wanted to hear, at least now it provides Ofoborh with an element of closure and allows him to pursue other ambitions.

In other Rangers news, a Jesse Lingard transfer update has emerged.
