Michael Beale gives Todd Cantwell disciplinary warning after Rangers incident

Michael Beale has given Rangers midfielder Todd Cantwell a warning about his in-game discipline after he avoided a possible red card against PSV.

Cantwell had already been shown a yellow card when he challenged Sergino Dest with a heavy tackle that on another night could have warranted a second yellow, only for referee Clement Turpin to take no further action.

The former Norwich City man was then substituted in the 86th minute having impressed throughout the game at Ibrox but Beale was quick to fire a warning towards Cantwell suggesting that he should be more wary in the future.

Speaking following the game with the Daily Record (23 August), Beale said: “I just feel there are times and places where you have to make fouls and tackles and that wasn’t one. He just needs to be careful.

“He is usually on the end of things like that, so I do like him to show his grit. But this is a new level for Todd. He has not played in Europe in his career, so this is a new level again. He will have learned a lot from tonight as well.”

Right idea, wrong time

What makes Cantwell such an important player for Rangers is his almost chaotic high-tempo attitude on the pitch that will see the Light Blues drive up the pitch and take the game to their opposition and that is the element of his game Beale is attempting to harness.

The issue with that is that it can occasionally bubble over, as shown on Tuesday (22 August) evening where many people both in and out of Ibrox thought the midfielder could and maybe should have been given his marching orders.

Cantwell has a desire to be involved in proceedings for the Gers that he can occasionally try too hard to have an impact on the game, which shouldn’t be a surprise after all it is his first experience of European football.

The 25-year-old will have to be especially careful during the return fixture in the Netherlands as after the controversial decision at Ibrox, the PSV fans will likely be on his back from the first minute of the game and he cannot let any sort of poor reception get under his skin.

Then again, few players on the blue side of Glasgow are as used to criticism as Cantwell.

In other Rangers news, there could be one final arrival at Ibrox this summer as the Gers look for the cherry on the cake
