Kris Boyd moots starting role for ‘lightning’ Rangers ace Rabbi Matondo after what happened v PSV

Kris Boyd “wouldn’t be surprised if Rabbi Matondo started for Rangers in their away clash with PSV next Wednesday (30 August).

The winger scored in the club’s Champions League play-off first leg 2-2 draw with the Dutch side on Tuesday (22 August).

Matondo’s goal came just nine minutes after he was introduced from the substitute bench by manager Michael Beale.

“Rangers will have to soak up a lot of pressure next week but, on the counter-attack, they looked dangerous, especially when Matondo came on with that pace he’s got, he’s lightning,” Boyd told Sky Sports.

“He’s forced his way into it, he wasn’t even in the European squad for the last tie. He’s managed to find his way into the squad to start with, and he’s come on and had an impact on the game, so I wouldn’t be surprised if he is one that starts next week.”

Beale to take a chance?

Matondo really has been somewhat of a disappointment since moving to the Scottish club, although he hasn’t exactly been handed regular playing time to show fans what he is all about.

This season, however, something has changed, with the 22-year-old registering one goal and one assist from his three matches this season, despite being on the pitch for a total of just 124 minutes.

Beale has brought in several new attackers this summer in the form of Cyriel Dessers, Sam Lammers, Abdallah Sima and Danilo, with the manager clearly unhappy with the options that were previously there.

But with Kent leaving upon the expiry of his contract, there is a gap to be filled, and Matondo may just land it if he continues his fine run of form.

Beale has plenty of huge decisions to make for the return leg in Eindhoven, with Matondo hopeful that he has done enough to earn a start next time out.
